In 2013, the MWFB started its Herpetology Collection through acquisition of the orphaned UC Davis Department of Zoology (now Evolution, Ecology, and Biodiversity) collection. This added the last classes of vertebrate taxonomy to the MWFB holdings with 4,800 specimens of reptiles and amphibians. Since then, we have added an additional 1,000+ specimens through field collecting. With a strength in California taxonomic holdings, the collection's highlights are historic amphibians collected in the 1920s by Tracy I. Storer. The MWFB's recent research efforts in Southeast Asia have identified new taxa, strengthening our understanding of biodiversity in this region. The MWFB collection houses one type specimen, with several undescribed forms currently undergoing descriptions.
